They make all of Nikons sensors, even the high end D3S and D3X dSLRs ones. They also made (or make?) Canon point and shoot sensors; at least as of a few years ago. Sony was one of the first with backlit CMOS as well.

Oh, and I think Pentax, if you want to consider them a camera compay, uses Sony sensors.

    Pentax use Samsung sensors.

I thought I would say why I am excited about this news. You can all say it's got nothing to do with megapixels and your right, a jump from 5 to 8 is hardly front page news worthy, all of Canons decent compacts use very nice 10 to 12 megapixel backlit sensors.
I'm excited because the Exmoor R Sony sensor has been hailed as a great device, because of it's lens and it's backlit CMOS. That's why I want it, I'm in way a professional photographer like the large majority of mobile phone owners. You want a camera on your phone that can take great pics when you have the time to frame and so on every shot, but also a device you can whip out and take very quick shots with. But you want it in a phone to save carrying another device as you always have your phone.

Because of this, moving to Sony is the best news yet as it will give users like me what I want that I think the current iPhone lacks. I would also like to see scene selections as well.

If I wanted to take care with photographs and wanted great shots every single time I would buy a beginners SLR.

And a note to Apple, considering the shake you can get holding a phone, is it really that hard to put a dedicated hardware camera button on the side? And move the flash away from the sensor and make it more powerful please?

Heres a review of the Xperia Arc's camera, and this is on early software for the phone too:

Does anyone in Australia (or anywhere else similar) know exactly when your education discount no longer applies for uni? Your last day of classes? Your last exam? Graduation day 2-3 months later? Because I should be finishing in February and I wanted to know how long to hold out. Will Leopard be out by Jan/Feb? Or at least a free upgrade for laptops purchased late Jan/early Feb?

The day of your last Exam. Or, your last day of classes, whichever is last.

If Apple manufactured their products in the US, the iPhone would probably cost $999 with a 2-year contract and the iPad would probably cost $1599 for the 16GB model.

When you have to pay someone $12 an hour to work an assembly line and pay for benefits and payroll taxes, that raises costs a lot to a country where you can pay 75 cents per hour and benefits like health insurance cost $5 a month rather than $500.

A 25-page document isn't necessary and the law would be dumb. All that it takes is for someone to take a basic economics course.

Americans who complain about jobs leaving overseas need to realize that when they go shopping they need to put their money where their mouth is. Everyone pays lip service to "made in the usa" but when they look at the price tags in the store they buy made in china!

The thing to watch here is if the quality improves when production is done in Brazil. If the production quality is the same or better, that's good news for consumers.
Electronics manufacturers are not in China for cheap labor. The manufacturing process is so automated that there is very labor involved. They manufacture in China because of currency exchange rates, and because of lax environmental laws.

...at this moment, it's not a problem most Mac users need to worry about. But blowing it off completely is sophomoric at best.

Yup. As others have said, this isn't an Apple specific problem, but its good to expose the flaws found and get them sorted. Nothing really to see here, move along.

Dang video keeps stalling on me. We much be flooding it with requests.

    Neat.

I had a surplus of $476B and solved SS 100%. I gutted military, but I bumped up United Nations, alternative energy, education, medical research, and worker re-training.

I also stopped just about all aid flowing out to other countries. I'll let Sally Struthers and the affluent private sector contribute if they want to... that is, if the affluent have anything left after the mondo taxes I dropped on them. :D

I don't understand the attitudes of some people. The more places we can purchase an Apple product the better. Just because an item is available at multiple stores does not make it an inferior product.

Interesting... I was about to edit my last post that Apple's site doesn't claim the Macbook has any slots... I can't see any in the Macbook QTVR images either.
It's a usb wireless card, I presume. He holds it up, flicks out the (usb) connector and plugs it into the left side of the Macbook. While he sticks in the card he says:
Don't think, however, just because we're attacking an Apple, the flaw itself is in an Apple. We're actually using a 3rd party wireless card.

I hope you're not referring to me when you say "people are so quick to call this an unfair attack on Apple".

Either scalpers have swooped in or there are a lot more geeks that just want to attend the conference.

I was seriously disappointed when I attended last years one, the Apple engineers couldn't answer either of my questions, the presentations only reaffirmed what I already knew or pointed to documentation / demo code that every developer got for free anyway.

If you are a serious developer and want to attend the conference to actually learn its a serious disappointment. But I guess most conferences are just to network and geek it up which is why it sold out I guess.

    What were your questions?

I was trying to add external display support to my iOS wireless collaborative drawing app (http://www.greengar.com/apps/whiteboard/), but I had run into a few problems. At WWDC I was able to work with 2 Apple engineers until we solved it. It was awesome; definitely worth it.

    Don't worry.

If the Chinese economy keeps growing at the same rate over the next decade they will be setting up manufacturing plants in the USA to take advantage of the cheap American labour. ;)

Haier, a Chinese company, currently manufactures appliances in South Carolina. Labor costs are not that relevant in modern manufacturing because of the level of automation.

No clue. I bet it would run but not all that well. I hope these comments on the rest of the Studio will calm some of the "sky is falling" pessimists. I'm not saying that FCPX is a home run yet but I'm more than happy to leave my torch and pitchfork in the shed based on what's been demoed so far.

Don't know what these people are talking about. It will run fine on a maxed out 13" air. It's not nearly the same as a maxed out Mac Pro, but it will work fine. These people are just blowing steam without a clue. No one really knows but you should be fine. That's what I have after all!

@OP, this is very sad. I have been with the facebook app forever. Infact I use it more often than my PC! I hope I get push notifications though...it's a shame. The fb app was the first one I got and it's without a doubt my most used app next to safari if you can consider safari an app.

I see this as an excuse for the developer to explore new horizons. Was it not the same "middleman process" when he first submitted the FaceBook app?? I'm sure it was; however maybe the recent changes are slowing final development to fruition & consumption.

Still the web still has a LONG way to go to become so called "best mobile app" because not all data should be sourced in real time or pulled/pushed when needed by the user. Many places where wireless provider data is STILL not truely unlimited & thus restricted (Canadian providers ALL the incumbents STILL charge & cap a specific ceiling of 1-2GB monthly with few % on the offered/pulled 6gb of data; along with tethering restrictions/allowances and so called "fair use" policies).

There are many applications that serve just as well or better with a single burst of data for 1 time & initial requests. Only specific changes in data which wold affect users are required and incremental.

Some applications, like stock data for trading applications, world news events/reports - need and require a continuous stream of data. Issue is web based cloud "apps" (more like interfaces) change not only the data presented to the end user, but many times augmenting the GUI layout which most of the times is not needed; this lacks in efficient data streaming, and more data bucket usuage & costs to the end user.

There is a HUGE reason why WML/WAP1.1 failed, and why WAP2.0 is in a static state of developmental evolution and suits feature phones, and not smartphones.

Yes I'm aware of HTML5 and what GoogleWave presents - but it proves that the GUI layout consistently changes due to new data streams and provides great event notifications - but its NOT suited for a battery packing handheld smartphone/feature phone device. To put it simply developers that code specifically to the web think of Desktops/Laptops (and recently MIDS) First & Foremost; mobile is thought up of only after mass consumption of their work is taken noticed. THAT is the issue.

Smartphones are THE MOST PERSONAL and trusted computing platform and thus heavily guarded by the end user. As such there NEEDS to be some kind of regulation, to what extent can be argued and never resolved for the next 10yrs - but it cannot nor should NOT be left to the end user!

At one point in the future, a smartphones evolution as a mobile device to a lifestyle personal companion should be as easy, as free, and as care free to use as our voices, words and hands (in any language, context & intent) and evolve as such. The only limitations are common sense, experience, and specific laws & moral aptitude for their uses.

Wow, that is thinking different. I think I'm high!!

not sure if anyone else has touched on this, but did anyone notice that music videos are gone?

Nope, they're just included in the MUSIC category.

How is apple service different from Amazon?. Other than a pretty interface (last time i checked, pretty interfaces did not save me money or help pay the bills).. what's different?. Is the pricing different?.. are the restrictions different?.. why shouldn't I buy from amazon.. what happened to "when apple comes out with their service, they will kill amazon"??

Pricing is different, cheaper in some cases with a lower max price. And restrictions are much better in iTunes, 5 versus 2. Plus the amazon thing isn't mac compatible, it behaves like spyware, and requires a custom player to play the files.

I really don't get all of those who constantly are saying things like "Don't care for them, they were before my time . . . " or "They're so old, they're not relevant . . .", etc. Really? I just don't get it. Monet, Davinci, Bach, Cole Porter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker were all before my time, yet I appreciate them. Having an artist being born before your time shouldn't have anything to do with "appreciating" them. That's the whole point - art is timeless. I' guess it has to do with how you grew up and what you were exposed to that makes a difference.

All kinds of music was being played in my house when I grew up. My dad played primarily four kinds of music in our house: classical, tango, opera and jazz and I got exposed to all of them - everyday. But all kinds of music would be played, not just these four kinds. While the Beatles were not one of the groups constantly being played on my dad's Hi-Fi, my parents did appreciate them and would play them on the radio once in a while, just to expose us kids to them. This, I believe, is one reason I listen to ALL kinds of music today. Not only do I listen to the classics, but also to many current and obscure artists of today. And I am doing the same with my son. He is exposed to all facets of music and art and has a great appreciation of all kinds of music. And you know who's his favorite? Louis Prima. My son's 6 years old and he couldn't care one bit when Louis was born. Not one bit. My dad would be proud.
