Hey guys,
I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to Mac repair. I did alot of PC tower work back in the day but I've recently been working on a MacPro tower for my student run TV station on campus.
Basically I plugged the machine in and before pressing any button it will click, the light will turn on simultaneously and it won't respond to the button being clicked. Also when I pull the power out it will click as it did when I plug it in.
So I figured this was some sort of power supply issue. After spending hours trying to find the right tool to get the heat sink off I pulled the power supply out. I looked in through the vent holes and it looked as if some sort of grey plastic had melted all over the internals. This was the second power supply for this unit and I found the first unit had the same grey matter inside but not in the same places.
Do you guys think it's worth my time to drop the money to get a new power supply or am I dealing with a bigger issue?
Thanks !
-Louis

Inklet (http://tenonedesign.com/inklet.php) is a program that will turn your trackpad into a tablet so it works like the screen of an iphone/ipad. It works well and is not very expensive. There is a trial version so you can see if works for you. I use a capacitive stylus with Inklet and Autograph (http://tenonedesign.com/autograph.php) (by same company) with my macbook and macbook air.

I'm trying to run an MBox 2 on this MacBook and getting nowhere so far. I'm also concerned about the lack of FireWire port, but it seems that I could save audio files on the internal HD or a USB HD.

The hubs and I are shopping around for a wireless router and also looking for one of those printer/copier/fax machines. This is where our trouble begins because we can't seem to find things that are compatible with both of our computers. His computer runs FreeBSD. We are networked through a regular router and our computers can talk to each other freely. Finding a wireless router that would work for both computers seems to be a bit of a problem. Has anyone been successful in setting up a wireless networking system and if so please share your tips. :)
Also this little situation is also making it hard to find a printer with wireless capabilities that works with both computers. Any suggestions on a printer would be wonderful as well! Thanks so much. :)
Well, I don't think the router should be the problem, as long as it supports 802.11b. The problem with FreeBSD or Linux is generally support for the wireless client cards - that's going to have to be 802.11b, and then only particular chipsets. A good place to check for that is the pcmcia-cs project (http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/), which is what most mature Linux distros (and I'd guess *BSDs as well) use for their wireless management.
As far as printers go, check on the CUPS website (http://www.cups.org/) (Common Unix Printing System) to see what's well supported using Internet Protocol Printing. I don't know what printing system is native to FreeBSD (lpr or whatever), but he can almost certainly install CUPS. That way you'll both be using the same basic printing management system.
Edit: I missed the fact that you're looking at those multi devices. You got me there. I haven't seen any of those that do any one of the functions very well, but I know some people like the concept.

Had a few friends over last night, played some music on my 5.1 set up and this morning I turn it all on to play some tunes and one of my inwall speakers is buzzing and "hissing" horribly. I was thinking of taking a video but what do you guys think? Can i fix this by myself? Is it ruined for good? If I have to replace how can I be sure the new speaker won't be louder than the others? I'm pretty sure the speaker is out of warranty by JBL.

I just loaded XP on my mac laptop, without bootcamp. Most everything seems fine so far except I can't create any wireless network. And there are several devices under device manager that are in error. Is this the reason for running bootcamp? Also, do I need to install bootcamp and then re-install xp, or can I load bootcamp without reloading XP? (I assume the prior).
Thanks,
Clayton

I was thinking of buying an iPod nano online from the Apple store.
The thing is that I never bought an Apple product online before.
I want to know exactly how a credit card charge on the Apple store breaks down; if there are hidden fees, etc.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
No hidden fees, you may have to pay tax.
Shipping isusually free.
Believe me, Apple is not going to commit credit card fraud.

You can most likely pick up a ATi 9800 Pro for about $20 and flash it.

I've a Mac Pro 1.1 and have been running games under Windows 7 for a couple years now (previously XP) just fine. However, my x1900xt - which has somehow managed NOT to fail like everybody else's, is really starting to show it's age.
In lieu of Skyrim being released in this upcoming November, I've been considering saving up and buying a second rig entirely devoted to PC gaming. Now, however, with the 5770 available for the Mac Pro, I'm wondering if it's worth simply going with that and saving myself a lot of money?
Have any of you had a similar dilemma, and if so what would you recommend?
I intend to run games at my monitor's native resolution of 1900x1080.

I have had this happen to me before. Before you go through the downgrading process, just go to the appstore on the iPhone and download any random app. For some reason, installing a new app fixes all the others and they open correctly. Hope this works for you!
This did work. I had a couple of app updates that I downloaded and installed and it enabled all of my other apps to work. I have no idea how or why it worked, but it did. Thank you everyone for your help!

Ok i have my g4 quicksilver
it has 3 ram slots
it only uses pc133
i have right now 512, 512, 256 =1.25gb
and soon the be 3x 512 =1.5gb
is there any way i can do more than 1.5gb in the g4
because i know my sawtooth can hold 2gb
any help would be great
According to Mactracker, max RAM for the Quicksilvers is 1.5 GB.
And yes, the Sawtooth can hold 2 GB under OS X.

The late '05s have much better airport reception than the older the older G5s without the built in antennas.
$50 seems like a good deal. The combo card itself is dirt cheap, it's just that riser card that is hard to find which is why they are more expensive.

Sounds like the wifi chip was ready to die and on its last leg.
Deactivating the sim had nothing to do with it, just happened around the same time.

even though i've been using the mac for a few months now, i found that once you buy one app, you find out there's another app out there you could have used, and sometimes, finding out about many of these apps is quite difficult if you didn't post on the forums about a specify program or something similar. i think the mac guides needs a page that just lists programs by category, like finance software, and cooking software, etc. i think something of the sort is already in the beginner's guide, but i think a more elaborate list that will cover at least most legit mac software should be in here. what do you guys think?

the tabs in safari are much nicer because they don't seem to have a feasible limit unlike camio which stops at sometime and begins to open new windows....

One of the functions I want is the ability for the software to tell me what CDs that I own and are also not in iTunes. I don't want the software, nor would I have a use, for it to catalog what files/albums that I purchased in the digital format.
Also, did I miss something? I swore the first link explicitly said Mac OS X.
Ok, sorry I was a little confuzzled. cdpedia seem then like the right fit. One of the features I saw was it automatically scanning iTunes and placing a blue mark by any CD that was in your iTunes library.
